On a recent visit with family in Florida, I visited, for the first time, an outlet of a local chain of delis, TooJay’s, in Jupiter. The meal and service were great, but the best part was when, at the end of our meal, a guy shows up with a beautiful platter of cake slices garnished with whipped cream and chocolate sauce, which we had not ordered. When I told him he was at the wrong table, he corrected me by telling me the platter was a gift for us, though we were anything but regular customers.
In an age (well-documented on these pages) when businesses try to give their customers less than they expect, TooJay’s little lagniappe was more than a pleasant surprise. Even though the coffees we all ordered to go with it probably covered the cost to the house of the cake, and ensured our server a larger tip, the unexpected gift put a lasting smile on my face, though cake is the last thing in the world I need. Three cheers for TooJay’s!
